Welcome to the Junior League of South Brevard

Mission Statement

The Junior League of South Brevard, Inc. is an organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women, and to improving the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Its purpose is exclusively educational and charitable.

About JLSB

The Junior League of South Brevard, Inc. (JLSB) began as a Service League in 1966. In 1980, we became part of the Association of Junior Leagues International, Inc.

Our members are more diverse than ever. We are full-time employees, and stay-at-home moms. Accountants to attorneys. Single and married. Women in our mid-twenties beginning our journeys and women with the wisdom experience brings.

Our members are the heart and soul of Junior League. Each year a group of new members joins. These women will grow into our future leaders. Active members devote thousands of volunteer hours to improving life for our friends and neighbors. Sustaining members provide guidance and direction and put the skills they learned in Junior League to work for other organizations across the community.

A common thread unites us. We all value the opportunity to make South Brevard County a better place.

On Thursday, August 18th, 2016. the Junior League of South Brevard hosted a reception at Suntree Country Club to celebrate 50 years of service to the community and to recognize community members and organizations that have made it possible.  Friends of the League as well as current and past League members joined together to celebrate.  Junior League of South Brevard’s president, Lindsay Sanger, kicked off a celebratory evening with a speech, touching on the League's history and accomplishments.  Her speech highlighted the various causes the League has had over the years and captured the essence of women in the community with a memorable quote from Melinda Gates, “when you invest in women, you invest in the people who invest in everyone else.”

The Junior League of South Brevard, Inc. (JLSB) is celebrating its ongoing legacy of developing community and civic leaders while making a tremendous difference in the community in recognition of its 50th anniversary. Since 1966, the organization has been a driving force in Brevard County through voluntarism, community support, partnerships and civic leadership training.

Throughout the JLSB’s 50 years, local members have focused on issues like bringing the arts, instrument instruction and history education to Brevard schools, assisted the county commission to develop Erna Nixon Hammock Park, provided aid to children with disabilities, drug education and prevention, literacy, assisting victims of domestic violence and providing parenting education to name a few. The league was also instrumental in the creation of The Haven and Club Esteem.

In 1986, The Haven, a shelter for abused, abandoned, and neglected children from birth to age six, began as a project of the Junior League of South Brevard.  The nine-bed shelter opened in April 1987.  In 1999, as the need for foster care continued to grow, The Haven board of directors proposed a project to build and furnish a second home which was accepted by the Junior League.  The new home, Haven II, opened in October 2001—all nine beds were filled immediately. The league has continued to remain a close community partner over the years, donating goods and services for the children living in the shelter.

The building of the 3,500 square foot Club Esteem Youth and Family Center was a groundbreaking partnership between the JLSB, the City of Melbourne, Brevard County, and the private sector. The Club Esteem Youth and Family Center opened its doors in 2003.

Although civic and community leadership training may not be what first comes to mind when most people think about the Junior League, the organization has been on the forefront of social reform, identifying problems — like illiteracy, domestic violence, foster children without a safety net — and finding solutions.

Members learn the ability to identify the most pressing problem facing a community and how to craft a solution in collaboration with community partners. Along the way, women learn valuable leadership skills that are used throughout their lives and develop friends that last a lifetime.

JLSB’s current community impact statement is "Improving Children's Health Through Nutrition and Physical Activity."  Projects like Fueling Kids and Kids in the Kitchen bring awareness and education to children about the importance of healthy living and supply children with healthy food options.

Lindsay Sanger, current president of the Junior League of South Brevard, says she is inspired by the legacy and impact of the league’s 50 year history in Brevard County. “As a member I’m proud to look at all that we have accomplished together as an organization and as a community,” explained Sanger. “I believe that we are not only impacting the community, but that the community is having a profound impact on us. We look forward to continuing our legacy of finding community need and solutions, as we train the next group of women leaders in Brevard.”

In recognition of its 50th anniversary serving the community, the Melbourne City Council presented a certificate to the Junior League at a council meeting in July. Additionally, County Commissioner Curt Smith will present a proclamation for the Junior League of South Brevard on August 9.

In July the JLSB kicked off the 2016-2017 Junior League year with a recruitment social at Crane Creek Medical Center.  The Membership Development Committee hosted a dozen potential new members and 11 active members.  We played games like Who Am I and People Bingo as fun icebreakers for everyone to talk to one another and find out a little more about the person standing next to them.  We also enjoyed raspberry champagne punch while watching the sunset from the balcony on the sixth floor.  We ended the evening by raffling off four prizes to our People Bingo winners.  In addition to her raffle prize, each winner received a $5.00 Starbucks gift card.  With a fresh start to the year, we look forward to welcoming in new members and starting our year off.  Anyone interested in becoming a new member of the Junior League of South Brevard Inc., should email memberdev@jlsb.net or visit the "Get Involved" section of our website.

The Junior League of South Brevard, Inc. (JLSB) was recognized by the City of Melbourne at the council meeting on July 12th.  Mayor Kathleen Meehan presented the Junior League of South Brevard with a certificate recognizing the League’s 50th year of service to the community.  Since 1966, the Junior League of South Brevard, Inc. has promoted volunteerism, helped to develop women to their highest potential, and has improved the community through effective action and leadership of trained volunteers.

Kudos to Liz Moran-Young and her amazing Fueling Kids Committee (Sarah Hughes, Brooke Paholik, Amanda Falvey) for their dedication to the children of Sabal and Christa McAuliffe Elementary Schools. They make a tremendous impact with weekly hands-on activities educating the children about nutrition and physical activity for proper health.
